Vitamin E (or Tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin (soluble in oils but not in water). Known for its antioxidant properties and its protective action on cell membranes, it is used to preserve preparations with a high oil content because it prevents them from becoming rancid. Vitamin E is also recognized to promote the maintenance of hydration and for its action on the skin microcirculation. It therefore plays a role both as a preservative and as an active ingredient for the skin.
