Willow bark contains salicin-type phenolic glycosides that is hydrolyzed in the digestive tract and then transformed into salicylic acid. According to the European Commission, willow bark is indicated in the symptomatic treatment of minor rheumatic conditions, feverish state and for the relief of minor pain. The active part of the Harpagofito, the harpagósido, is considered to be found in the secondary roots of Harpagophytum procumbens. In vivo experiments with extracts of harpagofito have evidenced an anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, hence its use in pain related to rheumatic problems, osteoarthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain.
According to the European Pharmacopoeia, the Ash leaf must contain at least 2.5% of total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives expressed as chlorogenic acid. The leaf is attributed an anti-inflammatory effect, due to protection against oxidative damage by inhibition of xanthine oxidase exerted by phenolic compounds and tannins. Tarragon leaves are used in herbal medicine for their content in essential oils (estragole). The root and aerial parts of Dandelion contain lactone and are popularly used for rheumatic disorders. Furthermore, the entire plant is considered purifying. The preparations based on flowers and aerial parts of Borage, are popularly used as anti-inflammatories, diuretics, etc. The leaves of the Coclearia, due to their essential oil content, have been popularly used as an anti-inflammatory. The Grass and the Corn are known among other things, for their purifying effects in rheumatic affections.
