Description
Cook's Whole Pink Berries are the fruit of the False Pepper Tree, a tree in the Anacardiaceae family, native to Peru where it is part of the spontaneous flora. This tree is also known as "Bourbon pepper" or "Reunion pepper", its appearance is that of the pepper tree with its long bunches of fruit. Its evergreen leaves give off an odor identical to that of pepper. It is a close relative of the pistachio tree, from the same family as the mango and sumac.
Indication
The name of the species comes from the Greek "schinos" meaning lentisk, because the tree produces a juice similar to the resin of lentisques, and terebinthifolius, "with pistachio leaves". It owes this resin as the secret tree to be sometimes called incense. Its spread all around the world (Reunion Island, Madagascar, Japan) results from trade trips and migrations. Sailors and pirates helped expand the growing areas by transporting seeds.
Ingredients
Schinus terebinthifolius, Fairtrade berries.
