Gymnema Silvestre, Ayurvedic medicinal plant.
Gymnema sylvestre is a plant of the traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) of the family (Asclepiadaceae) family of "milk herb" popularly known as "gurmar" for its property as a regulator of sugar levels . It grows in tropical and subtropical areas, in countries such as India, southern China, tropical Africa, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. It is a plant used naturally and effectively for diabetes, arthritis, anemia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia, heart disease, constipation, infections, anti-inflammatory and asthma.
Active principles and function of Gymnema sylvestre
1. Oleanno, hypoglycemic activity.
2. Gymnemic acid, lowering blood sugar because it binds to the intestinal receptor, blocking its assimilation.
3. Triterpenoids and saponins, hypoglycemic effect and anti hyperglycemic activity.
4. Gymnemic acid A1 and its derivatives have activity to block or diminish the sweet taste.
5. Gurmarin (polypeptide) blocks the ability to recognize sweet and sour taste.
6. Gymnemasaponins (Gymnemagenina and Gymnestrogenina) inhibit glucose absorption and have hypoglycemic activity
7. Terpenoids, fl avonoids, cinnamic acid, folic acid, tannins, eliminate H2O2 free radicals through SOD, reduce blood glucose and intestinal absorption, stimulate insulin secretion in β cells, and inhibit α- enzymes amylase and α-glucosidase
